A signature fouta takes 3 hours to weave, plus the time to prepare the loom and hand finish the fringes with care.

To maintain your fouta’s shape and fiber integrity, handwash or machine wash on cold on a delicate cycle using mild, liquid laundry detergent. Do not use softener. Hang or lay flat to dry. Finish with a warm iron if desired. It will become softer with each wash.

Tunisia (تونس) is in North Africa, part of the Maghreb region. Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north and east, it shares land borders with Algeria and Libya. Its capital is Tunis, a vibrant city in the northeast.

Geographically diverse, about 40% of Tunisia is covered by the Sahara Desert, while the rest features fertile lands, and the birthplace of the ancient Carthaginian civilization. The official language is Arabic, with French widely spoken. Tunisian cuisine is known for its intense flavors, including couscous and the famous harissa chili paste.

Fouta Harissa was founded in Brazil in 2018 when Lamia first moved there and pulled out her Tunisian fouta on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, only to realize that a similar product did not exist locally. During the pandemic, we closed our Brazilian operations to focus on the U.S. In 2025, we relaunched the brand in Brazil but in many ways we never left; Brazilian creatives—art directors, photographers, designers—have long been part of our visual and conceptual language. We now have separate dedicated websites, one for the U.S. and one for Brazil. This return simply makes visible what was already true: that craft prospers when it moves, listens, and adapts without erasing its origin. Read more about this evolution here.
